It's a fun place to be :)

First, bake your cakes (2-8" round pans)-- I used a box (yes, a box) of Red Velvet. The frosting starts with a crumb coat. It's a thin layer of white frosting to seal off the cake & get it ready to decorate. This is important so your cake stays firm & crumbs don't get dragged into the frosting. It also seals in the cake to keep it moist! I usually put it in the fridge while I mix my colors so the frosting gets firm.
Since
we are in the 21st Century, the Internet now becomes your right-hand man! Find a
picture you want on your cake, print it off in the size you want on your cake...
Trace away! This is brilliant! When you have the figure traced around
the outsides, it's so much easier to fill in the center
parts proportionally.
Then you're going to want to give Elmo some life!
A little background color for him to hang out in.
And a little extra stuff to make it cute... You're done!
Well... many hours later you're done!
Last years cake...
